What's the Big Deal about not-for-profit third-class mailing privileges?

On all God's green earth, there's nothing better than third-class, non-profit mailing privileges. They allow worthy organizations to mail postcards, letters and newsletters at one-third or less of the cost paid by for-profit organizations like corporations and other businesses.

However, non-profit third class mailing privileges are available only to organizations that can prove they have federal tax exempt status, often known as 501(c)3.
