Non-Profit? Not So Fast!

Years ago I priced a huge mailing for a new client. "We're a non-profit," our client said, and I took her at her word.

We quoted the labor and what her postage would be. When, weeks later the printed piece came in, we did the mailing and brought it to the post office.

True, they were a non-profit...but they had forgotten a little detail: They hadn't submitted the proper paperwork to postal authorities!

Remember:

  1. There are a variety of postal classifications relating to non-profit status, but only one is recognized by the Postmaster for reduced postage rates.

  2. Your organization must register to get those low rates.

  3. Registering is one thing, while obtaining a permit is another. Assuming you do have non-profit status, you do not have to obtain a permit, because you can use CITYMAIL's at no charge beyond the cost of postage and handling.

  4. Only certain kinds of advertising can be included on your mail.

  5. You cannot 'borrow' another non-profit's permit.

  6. Your return address must be on the mailing panel.
